唐津妖怪 karatsu youkai

唐津妖怪 (Karatsu youkai,monster in Karatsu)

There was an apparition in the moat around the Karatsu castle. All people who had seen fainted. Therefore, nobody saw the face of the apparition. A certain scholar was invited to the castle. The scholar went to the moat where the apparition existed hearing the rumor. When he was stopping, a large man with pale face stood up from among the moat. A man stands in the surface of the water, and is a digit with the glare as for him. He guessed sitting down and returned it. Several hours have passed. A man melted like ice, and marks were lost. Thereafter, the apparition was gone.

狐の髪切 kamikiri

狐の髪切(kamikiri,Hair Cutter)

Japanese Fox liked to eat the hair of man or woman in Yedo period.

One samurai's hair was cut out while sleeping. The hair under the pillow was not cut. The head was very stinky. Slaver had stickily adhered to the hair.

It was guessed that fox's purpose was pomade.

猫多羅天女 myautara-tennyo (old angel withered the cat)

One old woman lived in the foot in the Mt. Yahiko. When she was taking a rest on the mountain, one cat appeared.
The cat rolled on sand and turned,and seemed to be very pleasant.
She mimicked the cat, rolled on sand, and turned.
The cat would appear the next day and the next day, and she was mimicking the cat.
The old woman came off the hair, sharpened before long the fingernail, changed also the face, and became very light.
She got rough the village.
The villager worshiped the old woman as a god.
The old woman left for the sky.

三頭蛇 mitou-ja

三頭蛇 mitou-ja (three headed snake)

Nicchou temple in Yonezawa had had this one.The length of this bone was 60cm.The snake that was attaching the head was rare also in the tail in Yedo period.

槌子坂 Tsuchiko-Zaka

槌子坂 Tsuchiko-Zaka (Hammer-monster Slope)

There are a gentle slope named Tsuchiko-Zaka in Kanazawa. The grass grow thick, water flows, everyone feels badly there even at daytime. Especially in a rainy midnight, when the person who thinks himself strong passes, sometimes It appears rolling ,and coming. It seems to be a huge hammer. However, it is jet-black. It is rolling here and there ,around the man ,and shines rapidly, and vanish with laughing loudly as the moment.

Many people saw it there in Yedo period, almost all got sick.It will be an old apparition because it is handed down for a long time.

窟女 Iwaya Onna

窟女 Iwaya Onna (Cave Woman)

In the valley in the Kawamata river in Ise, there was a cave of the height of about 3 meters. In Kanbun years, The person who doubted there was someone in the cave made the raft and went into there. He looked about 30-year-old woman hung there. Her hair pasted to the ceiling. She did not look painful.

He cut the hair down and brought her to his village, and gave water and pour medicine. She came out of delirium and said I am a daughter of the village chief in the Hana village in Mino. She had no memory without it. It was told to Mino people, and many people came there, and received her and returned. No one told why she was hung,or she hung herself.

悪魚 aku_gyo

悪魚 aku_gyo (means "Bad Fish")
Aku_Gyo is a word used as a general noun, sometimes; Fish as ferocious as dogfish, or Fish that causes misfortune.In Japan people rumored that there was a monster that had a beautiful woman's head and a fish or snake's body before Meiji period. It was discrived only a mermaid, or a monster who ate people,or God who come from sea to prophesy.



I have no time now. I will transrate these sentences into English later.

人工精霊 jinkou_seirei (an artificial spirit)

Spirit that some occultists produce and sell in Japan.Occultists insist that they can make it.It is enclosed in a small bottle, and the name of arms is applied. The one named "FOBS" is famous.
It is not visible.It is assumed that it has temporary power of curse, and a realistic effect. We can see the influence of the occultism in the West , and also "Pokemon". In the old Japanese mystery principle, there were a kind of spirit, "SHIKI", and magicians of the "Onnmyou_dou" used it oftenly.SHIKI was employed by the "Onnmyou_ji",and took various actions as the magician ordered it. It looks like the existence of the heaven that was called "Douji" (meens "Child") that the high Buddhism priest employed. It seems that each idea was transmitted from ancient China. This idea often appears in the manga.

ichigen_issoku 一眼一足

ichigen_issoku(one eye and one leg),japan

Legend high priest "Jinin慈忍" who existed in Mt.Hiei(temple) in Kyoto. After he died,his spirit changed his body to the strange appearance...had only one leg and only one eye.He always carried the bell from his neck with ringing it,and hold with his hand a red cane. He walked around the mountain in midnight,and angered some young priests who was cutting the twicer or admonish training. An old picture that draws the appearanced and his cane remains.

tsuno_daishi 角大師


Legend high priest who existed in Mt.Hiei (temple) in Kyoto. He,Ryogen良源(元三大師) had strong mysterious power. He was changed to the appearance of the satan that put out horns by the power when the epidemic went around, and repulsed the satan who made the cause of the epidemic. The picture that draws the appearance is believed in as an amulet now. Ryogen was rumored that had the other various ESPs, and postmortem also catching lightning in a bottle. He is called by the name of Tsuno_Daishi means "horn saint".

Frightening demon of having lived in Kochi. It was said that it appeared with the ghost with the bucktooth of 17 years old as the wife.


Woman who went out to show in Edo period. Feet were able to be moved faster and more dexterously than the hand was used though were greatly only three fingers.

It was a girl who showed up as a show in Edo period.Her belly was covered with the scale like the snake.

粟田口康綱(凶剣)Sword of curse

粟田口康綱Awataguchi_yasutsuna(凶剣 Sword of curse),japan
It was said that the person who obtained this sword was always crazy, and violated the mass murder. A famous samurai who had this sword was a sudden cutting killing the farmers of the street clinging, and committed harakiri suicide. There are a lot of stories that look like this in Japan, and a similar story is handed down to the Ainu race.


小玉鼠kodama_nezumi(means Rat like small gem)
Animal being handed down by hunter in the Tohoku region. It destroys oneself when it encounters the person. The encountered person becomes unhappy.


Mysterious bird that infested in the mountain in the Tohoku region. It had the eyeballs like the owl, and it walked by two legs like a human. It read person's mind, and had power to forecast the future. The cry is still heard now. Like this,"God of mountain" was believed by people that it had the telepathy and the prospect ability in Japan.(Sometimes "God of mountain" means "missis" in Japan,but this is not.)

Monster from sea in Kemi_ura that got into the news with newspaper about 100 years ago.This monster attacked the private house on the beach. The hair was brown, eyes were the orange colors, and the mouth was like crocodilians.

歩く石 walking stones

Story that actually happened about 70 years ago. The person in Osaka has picked up 16 small stones. When putting it in the pond in the garden,the fishes came to the surface and died. Then she brought them in the house.After a few hours,she saw the room and watched the stones tried to unite the circle and to go outside of the house from a window. after the child had taken it to the outside as a plaything,anything did not happen.
